How To Hike To Cristo At Corcovado, Rio de Janeiro

It's surprising that we couldn't find information online about hiking to see the Cristo Redeemer statue at Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro. The confusion is over the entry to the monument. When you take the Funicular Train (R36), the monument entry is included in the cost of the ticket. Any other method to get there, including hiking and there is a R24.75 entry fee.

The start of the hike to Corcovado is at the back of Parque Lage which is not far from the Botanic Gardens in Zona Sul. We took bus 125 from Copacabana to the park (R2.50). Once inside the park, check out the Art School there and then follow the signs to the torre (tower).

The trail starts at the bottom of the tower. You go up a flight of steps and onto a paved path. The path splits near some small waterfalls but there is a sign pointing to Corcovado. It is a fairly narrow trail from here on.

After about an hour of hiking you cross the Funicular Train lines and climb up onto the road. If you continue up the road you get to the monument, but you still need your ticket. You should be able to get one of the Bel Tours buses to take you to the ticket office or perhaps you could walk back down the same road.

It was raining when we arrived so we didn't actually visit the monument. Instead we took the Funicular on a sunny day. Bus 583 gets you from Copacabana to the Funicular for R2.50, and bus 584 will get you back (but not bus 584A).

Nowadays you can buy your entrance tickets in the statue base, no need to get back down to buy them. The prices and trail path have been modified as well. I suggest you hire an adventure company to do the hiking with you, since it will increase the information you get on the environment, the safety all over the tour and you will have a professional adventure guide to rely on. One of the adventure tour operators is Nattrip: www.nattrip.com.br
